News highlights this week

🔥 Hot Takes: Are Airdrops Dead?

Following a tremendously disappointing series of airdrops from high profile projects including LayerZero, ZKsync, and Eigen Layer, the crypto community is left questioning if airdrops have become a thing of the past. Airdrop hunters and project founders alike have taken to Twitter debating the purpose of airdrops in 2024.

From the perspective of airdrop hunters, the sentiment is clear: the effort no longer matches the reward. In the past, making a few transactions with a new protocol and being among the first users often resulted in lucrative 4-5 figure airdrops. Over the years, token allocations have continued to shrink, and eligibility criteria have become increasingly stringent. For example, even being in the top 5% of users for the LayerZero airdrop only yielded around 100 tokens (~$312). It seems airdrop farming has become too mainstream.

On the other hand, project founders face a dilemma with airdrops. While they are an effective tool for user acquisition and generating hype, they often attract users who are solely interested in the short-term gain. Many recipients quickly sell their tokens and disengage from the project, leaving founders with a transient user base and a diluted token distribution. The challenge lies in balancing the initial buzz with attracting committed users who add long-term value to the project.
