📰 Tokenization – The Third Revolution in Asset Management
A new report from Boston Consulting Group (BCG) estimates that tokenized assets could achieve over $600 billion in AUM by 2030, marking what BCG describes as the "third revolution in asset management." Following in the footsteps of mutual funds and ETFs, tokenized funds could reshape the industry by bringing unprecedented transparency, efficiency, and accessibility to traditional assets like bonds, real estate, and equities.
The Benefits of Tokenized Funds
Tokenization introduces several high-impact benefits to asset managers, investors, and markets:
Instant Settlement and Liquidity – Blockchain eliminates settlement delays, allowing faster access to funds and freeing up trapped capital.
Lower Costs – Tokenized funds can reduce transaction costs significantly by handling more transactions in secondary markets and through automated smart contracts.
Improved Collateralization – Unlike traditional assets, tokenized funds can be used as instant collateral, opening up new opportunities for lending and borrowing.
Intra-Day Trading Gains – With 24/7 trading, investors can leverage intra-day price changes to capture additional returns.
These advantages collectively could add between $80 billion and $400 billion in annual returns for investors, according to BCG.
Pathways for Development and Key Requirements
BCG envisions two primary development pathways:
Gradual Growth Path Similar to ETFs: If tokenized funds grow at the pace of early ETFs, they could achieve $600 billion AUM by 2030.
Accelerated Adoption through Conversion of Existing Funds: If clear, low-friction conversion pathways are created for existing mutual funds and ETFs, tokenized assets could reach trillions in AUM. This would require regulatory clarity, global standards, and interoperability between blockchain-based and traditional assets.
